According to Hindu legend, the city of Dwarka was built by Krishna on a piece of land derived from the sea. Rishi Durvasa once went to meet Krishna and his wife Rukmini. The sage wished that both Krishna and Rukmani take him to his palace. The couple readily agreed and accompanied Rishi to his palace. After some distance Rukmini got tired and asked Krishna for some water. Krishna dug a mythical hole that was brought into the Ganges River. And this made Rishi Durvasa furious and cursed Rukmini to stay in the same place. It is believed that today the temple is located exactly where Rukmani ji stood.

The grand Dwarkadhish temple known as “Jagat Temple of Dwarka” is a five-storied temple structure which was constructed in the Chalukya style. This enchanting temple is made of limestone and sand. The five storied buildings of this temple are supported by 72 pillars and a 78.3 meter high intricately carved spire. It has exquisitely carved pinnacle which is 42 meters high with a flag made of cloth 52 yards high. The flag has symbols of the sun and moon, ruling the temple of Lord Krishna, as long as the sun and moon are present.
The grandeur of the temple is the two gates Swarga asana (where the pilgrims enter) and the Moksha gate (where the pilgrims exit) include a porch, garbhagriha and a rectangular hall with porches on either side. Outside the south gate of the Edifice, there are 56 stairs leading to the banks of the Gomti River.
